Is paying for a service you have yet to receive or experience really working? —

As an estate agent I only ever expect to get paid for selling a house once
my client has the money in the bank from the buyer. Sounds straight forward
enough doesnt it? In other words, we operate our business on what is known
as a no sale no fee basis. In estate agency you dont get paid for effort
or by the hour, you get paid when you have delivered the results.
However, there are some home owners who pay an upfront estate agent fee and put
their faith and expectations in an individual who promises to sell their home. A couple I met this week considered this approach - but - where is the ongoing incentive to achieve that top price, sort out chain problems and deal
with survey results? The estate agent already has the fee from you! The second largest upfront
fee estate agent in the UK, which had 4,000 properties for sale, has recently
gone bust leaving clients with nothing to show for their money. Is this not
one of the biggest examples of you get what you pay for. I think it must be.
